Biblical Soul-Care and Modern Therapeutic Modalities:
Compare and Contrast

At Truth in Love Biblical Counseling we hold that God's Word is sufficient for every matter of life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). That conviction does not make us narrow; it makes us careful. We maintain a "bigger barn" approach that engages the full breadth of Scripture rather than reducing biblical soul-care to a single theological tradition or a handful of proof texts. We study the therapeutic landscape thoroughly, we treat its practitioners and its counselees with respect, and we measure every framework by the same standard: does it lead the person toward Christ?

Those who come to us for care have often encountered other frameworks first. A friend mentioned CBT; a physician suggested EMDR; a podcast described IFS and made it sound promising; a family member found DBT helpful and wondered whether you might too. These conversations come into our counseling rooms every week, and they deserve a thoughtful response rather than a dismissive one.

This section of our website offers a series of short, pastoral notes that set biblical soul-care alongside the therapeutic modalities most commonly encountered today. Our approach is not to dismiss every observation these modalities make; many of them notice something real about how human beings think, feel, and change. Our approach rests on a single axiom: whatever informs our counseling defines our counseling. A framework built without reference to the Lord cannot finally lead us to the Lord, however useful its observations may be along the way.

Each note follows the same simple pattern. We describe the modality fairly, name what it rightly observes, identify the primary difference in aim, and explain how biblical soul-care engages the same ground more fully. Across every piece the contrast is the same at its root; where modern therapies aim to equip a person with coping strategies, symptom relief, or functional improvement, biblical soul-care aims to root a person in his or her identity in Christ and in a deepening relationship with the living God.

We offer these notes in the hope that they will help you think carefully about the care you have been offered, the care you are considering, and the care we believe the Lord has given us in His Word and by His Spirit through His people. New pieces will be added as the need arises; if there is a modality you would like us to address, we welcome your correspondence.

A Word to Pastors and Referring Professionals. These notes reflect the position and practice of Truth in Love Biblical Counseling. If you are a pastor seeking to understand how we engage the therapeutic modalities your congregants may encounter, or a physician, therapist, or other professional considering a referral, we welcome the conversation.

We do not view ourselves as adversaries to the clinical community; we view ourselves as fellow laborers who bring a different foundation and a different aim. We are happy to discuss how our care complements, differs from, or interfaces with the care you provide, and we are committed to serving the whole person with the rigor and compassion that every image-bearer deserves.
